JAMES URSELL
12 Canvasses and a Canoe

Allsop Gallery: Bridport Arts Centre, South Street, Bridport, Dorset, UK
Tuesday 17th February - Saturday 13th March

Powerstock-based contemporary artist James Ursell presents a major solo exhibition at Bridport Arts Centre showcasing his recent paintings.

A farmer's son from Devon, James has spent much of his life in the country, apart from a year spent in Berlin before moving to Dorset. James said, "A theme runs through my work of going back to a deeper understanding of the natural world. My father was an art dealer in London in the 1960's but gave it up to go into organic farming. My work looks at man's intrusion in nature."

Matt Hayden from the virtual gallery Art-village that is supporting the exhibition said, "James' images of fantastical visions and anthropomorphic motifs unlock a profound experience of the world, raising as many questions as they provide answers."

James' ascendance to national importance has included much noteworthy collaboration, primarily in England and Germany, including performances across Europe and participation in the renowned DAAD in Berlin.

James also achieved huge press interest following shows at the prestigious Spacex Gallery in Exeter, where he joined Damian Hirst. This led to a nomination for the Becks Futures award at the ICA in 2002.

Most famous for his monumental installations, James' work is widely published, featuring in books with Andy Goldsworthy. Constructions produced during 2002 included a cavernous straw-bale building "The Love Palace", large enough to hold the 200 guests that attended his wedding. Originally a painter, he has returned to the medium with renewed enthusiasm.
